Care & Sterilization of Surgical Retractors
Reusable Retractor Maker retractors are made from Premium Grade AISI 304/316 Stainless Steel (Non-Magnetic). Correct cleaning, inspection, sterilization and storage keep them working smoothly and protect them from stains and corrosion.
1. Clean immediately after use
- Remove blood and tissue as soon as possible after surgery; never let soil dry on the instrument.
- Open ratchets and hinges and take modular systems apart before cleaning.
- Use neutral or mildly alkaline instrument detergents. Avoid saline, bleach and abrasive pads.
- Clean manually with soft brushes or in an ultrasonic cleaner, then rinse well with clean, preferably demineralised, water.
2. Dry, inspect and lubricate
- Dry instruments fully before sterilization or storage.
- Check blades, teeth, ratchets and joints for damage, cracks, residue or stains.
- Apply a water-soluble instrument lubricant to hinges and ratchets.
- Remove damaged instruments from use.
3. Sterilize
Stainless steel retractors are suitable for steam sterilization (autoclave). Always follow your sterilization department's validated cycle and your autoclave manufacturer's instructions.
- Sterilize instruments in the open or unlocked position.
- Do not overload trays; allow steam to reach every surface.
- Let instruments cool and dry completely before handling or storage.
4. Store safely
- Store in a clean, dry place, in trays or racks that protect blades and tips.
- Keep different metals apart to avoid contact corrosion.

Yes. Reusable stainless steel retractors can be steam sterilized. Follow your facility's validated autoclave cycle and the instrument's instructions.
Why do surgical retractors get stains or rust?
Stains and rust usually come from dried blood, saline, harsh chemicals, hard water or instruments left wet. Clean promptly, rinse with clean water and dry fully.
Should retractors be lubricated?
