The Balfour Retractor is a foundational self-retaining surgical retractor engineered to provide stable, hands-free wound edge separation during general abdominal and pelvic operations. By utilizing a smooth sliding crossbar and positive screw lock mechanism, this instrument maintains bilateral abdominal wall retraction while minimizing assistant fatigue.
Designed to accommodate a wide variety of surgical incisions and patient physical profiles, the Balfour Retractor is manufactured in three standardized clinical configurations: a 200 × 155 mm frame (with 47 × 80 mm center blade and 60 mm deep lateral blades), a 200 × 235 mm frame (with 62 × 76 mm center blade and 60 mm deep lateral blades), and a large 200 × 265 mm frame (with 80 × 80 mm center blade and 90 mm deep lateral blades). Each option features an adjustable third-arm center blade to displace the bladder or visceral contents atraumatically.
